ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2
PROJECT I: Famous People, Familiar Faces - Diagrammatic Abstraction (Group)
To investigate and explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics. Upon completion of the project, students should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to Project 2. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic drawing to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.
In group of 6, we are to select one of the following Master Architects & their masterpieces; Walter Gropius Gropius House we are required to prepare 10 minute presentation (PowerPoint) on the selected master architect and respective work.
2. We are to produce a complete set of architectural drawings (scale of 1:100) of the selected masterpiece on A3 size paper.
- site plan & floor plans
- sections & elevations
- axonometric & perspective
3. We are then required to investigate and formulate our findings into a set of 12 analysis diagrams and 12 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm). The models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned.
The analysis is based on, but not limited to the following:
- organization of form
- organization of space
- circulation and paths-space relationship
- spatial hierarchies - context - elements
We are to use no more than three colours and the models should be well crafted and beautifully made to be mounted on MDF board
Introduction to Site Analysis
In group of 2, conduct site analysis of the physical context within the overall site. Use the following reference as a framework for your recording and analysis of your site: White, E. 2004. Site Analysis: Diagramming Information for Architectural Design. Tallahassee, Florida: Architectural Media Ltd. Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams:
Site plan (Site section, Site Boundaries, North Point, Contours)
Existing Structure (Significant Architectural Language/Feature , Adjacent building/structure building to remain/demolish)
Landscape (Natural features, Soil Condition, Surface Drainage, Existing vegetation)
Climatic Studies (Sun path, wind direction, rain)
Circulation pattern (pedestrian, vehicular)
Views and Vistas (Panoramic /spot in, out, approaching)
Activities (category -dry/wet, zoning, noise)
Case Studies (Grand Canyon Skywalk, Arizona + Pinohuacho observation deck, Chile)
PROJECT 2A: Observation Deck (Group)
This is a 4 week project where students are required to understand the concept of simple space planning requirement of an observation deck (with a maximum volume of 30m3) in relations to the architectural languages from Project 1. Students are also required to conduct simple site analysis of the physical context of the site.
The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation (which you are required to choose 2 ‘keywords’ from project 1), with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.
1. Site analysis - of the physical context eg site plan, site section, site elevation.
2. A series of 2D diagrams (1 piece of A3.) - Diagrammatic explanation of the composition of Space and Form
3. A series of detail drawings (1:50 scale)
4. A series of models (1:50 scale) a minimum of 4 which includes: 3 process models and a final model.
PROJECT 2B: Retreat House (Individual)
This project requires the students to further explore the idea of the observation deck into a more complex program. Students are required to understand the spatial requirement (maximum area 150m2) of a retreat house and translate them onto architectural program that includes public and private spaces for relaxing, dining, cooking, washing and etc.
As a group we had visited the site, Cape Rachado, Port Dickson and finished the site investigation & ‘nature scanning’ to initiate the preliminary conceptual approach of the Observation Deck. we are expected to complete a site visit to record important information pertaining to our project. A completed site analysis should be available in our design studio at all time for references during the design process. Now it is important for own work to reflect own understanding of how architecture is created by applying the basic design principles and spatial organization skills. Work must also illustrate an understanding of how a building is conceptualized and transformed into reality. Project 2b extends the understanding of design concept and process. It introduces the notion of architectural space making through the design of a user specific architectural scheme. This project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, function and space in architecture.
1. Five (5) A5 Sketches
2. Sketches + Work in progress models
3. Diagrammatic explanation of the composition of Space and Form
4. Site Analysis of the physical context (site plan, site section, site elevation – Scale of 1:500)
5. A full set of Architectural drawings (floor plans, sections, elevations, axon and perspectives)
