BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
PROJECT I: Documentation and Analysis
The aim of is to expose and introduce students to various construction elements by visiting construction sites. It also intends to enhance the understanding of principles of construction, sequence of construction activities, importance of basic detailing, construction joints and material application through real life projects. It also creates an opportunity to study the relationship between site and construction method.
Our task is to select an ongoing construction site which visibly demonstrates most of the subject topics covered in the syllabus. Our selected sites should be medium rise or low rise buildings eg. bungalow, terrace houses or maximum 4-storey building. To identify different types of building elements and its construction process, details and materials. We are to study and record construction of different building elements, which We have learnt in this module. Specifically, we should be able to show and apply ourknowledge in the details of the building construction drawing that we are to compile, thereby reflecting your understanding of the construction itself.
Document (Visual images, Annotated Sketches and Drawings)
Construction process, methods, materials, site context.
Documentation should be in the form of photos, pictures, sketches, drawings and annotations. Analyse and Explain
Specifications of materials used in construction
Dimensions and sizes of components
Standards of descriptions
Procedures in constructing the components
Construction response to site context (environmental issues related to sustainable development)
PROJECT 2: Integrated Construction Solution.
This project is a continuation of the first project - an integrated project where it involves construction detailing solution for Project 2b in Architecture Studio 2. This project is designed to allow the demonstration of knowledge and understanding of construction and application from prior project. Emphasis in producing related manual construction drawing for STEEL and/or TIMBER detail and specification. Technical knowledge is viewed as something separate from design. One of the aims of this assignment is to develop an awareness and understanding of the strong interrelationship between these two areas of study. Critical success of any design project relies on a designer’s ability to address issues of appropriate methods of construction, integration of structure and the selection of materials whilst addressing the many other complex issues that are part of the design process. This assignment will enable me to develop and demonstrate some knowledge of construction, materials and structural theory in a small scale design project.
Moving on from documentation and analysis of construction process and activities this assignment focuses on the demonstration of knowledge that I have acquired earlier on. This second assignment emphasizes on proposing details for certain sections of a building, both structural and architectural detailing.
My task is to identify and propose THREE (3) numbers of details for selected element or part of the building apart from providing the necessary plans, section and elevations. The 3 ARCHITECTURAL DETAILINGS must cover the following designs in my studio project:
1) Roof
2) Superstructure (wall/slab/staircase etc.)
2) Joint and connection
